Edmonton Comedy Festival: Thirteen Shows Across Five Rooms
Four nights, five venues, and a format built around rooms rather than a single stage. How the festival works and which show to pick.
Most festivals put everything on one site and ask you to move between stages. The Edmonton Comedy Festival does the opposite: it takes over five rooms that already do comedy and programmes each of them differently for four nights. Which room you pick matters more here than which night you go.
What it is
A four-day comedy festival produced by Andrew Grose, running around thirteen shows with roughly twenty-one performers across five venues. It is a festival of rooms rather than a festival of stages, and each series has its own character.
The five venues, and what each one is for
Fringe Theatre Arts Barns hosts the main stage shows, three of them. This is the biggest room and the closest thing to a gala: a proper theatre, tiered seating, several comics on a bill.
Spotlight Cabaret carries four Spotlight Series showcases. Cabaret format, smaller, and where you tend to see the acts on the way up.
Yuk Yuk’s runs three Club Series shows. A comedy club doing what a comedy club does, which is the most familiar format of the five.
Sawmill Restaurant has two dinner shows. Comedy with a meal, which suits an occasion better than it suits a purist.
Grindstone Comedy Theatre & Bistro takes one show. Grindstone is Edmonton’s home for improv and alternative comedy, so it is the least conventional bill of the festival.
How to choose
The choice is really between the theatre and the club. The Arts Barns main stage gives you the polished, multi-act show and the best seats. Yuk Yuk’s and Spotlight give you the room where comics take risks, because a smaller crowd forgives more. Grindstone is the one to pick if you want something that is not stand-up at all.
If you are bringing people who do not go to comedy often, the dinner shows at the Sawmill are the softest landing.
What it costs
Tickets are sold per show rather than as a festival pass, and they go on sale on 1 September each year. Prices vary by venue, with the main stage shows at the top of the range and the club and cabaret rooms below it. The schedule page carries the current prices.
Worth knowing before you go
Five venues means five parts of the city. Check where your show actually is before you set off; the Arts Barns is on Gateway Boulevard in Old Strathcona, Grindstone is on 118 Avenue.
Individual shows sell out rather than the festival selling out. A gala going is no guide to whether the cabaret has room.
Comedy club rooms are small. Sitting at the front is a decision, not an accident.
